Choosing a sofa for a small apartment: six practical tests

The most common mistake in a small apartment is trying to fit both a sofa and a separate guest bed. A piece that carries two functions in one body does twice the work in the same footprint.

1. Measure depth, not width

In narrow living rooms the real constraint is depth. An armchair folded to 32 cm sits against the wall without blocking the walkway.

2. Legs or no legs?

Legs make it easier to sweep underneath but visually cut the room in half. Legless, low-profile forms make ceilings read as higher in small spaces.

3. Check the bed height

For sofa beds the critical number is how far off the floor the open bed sits. Anything under 30 cm feels like sleeping on the ground. Our convertible models sit at 32 cm.

4. Does the cover come off?

In a small home the sofa is also a desk, a dining table and a guest bed. A fabric you cannot wash means replacing the piece within two years.

5. Whether the parcel fits up the stairs

In buildings without lifts, many sofas are returned simply because they will not pass the door. Vacuum packing largely removes that risk.

6. One piece or modular?

Modular sets move piece by piece and adapt to a different room later. People in small homes move often — that is not a trivial detail.
